A’s Break Ground On New Stadium

With mounds of dirt, construction vehicles and the exact location where home plate will be at the new Athletics ballpark serving as the backdrop Monday morning, team owner John Fisher stood in front of a large gathering with one message: “We are Vegas’ team.”

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, state and local government dignitaries, former Athletics greats such as Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, Little Leaguers and many others looked on as the team celebrated the groundbreaking of a $1.75 billion, 33,000-person capacity ballpark that is expected to be finished in time for the 2028 season.

Nevada and Clark County have approved up to $380 million in public funds for the project.

Nationals fire General Manager

The Washington Nationals have fired manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo, the team announced.

The Nationals this season are 37-53 with a minus-86 run differential and in last place in the National League East. If paces hold, it will be Washington's fifth last-place finish in the last six years.

Under Rizzo and Martinez, the Nationals have been slow to realize the fruits of a rebuild that took place after the 2019 title run.

On behalf of our family and the Washington Nationals organization, I first and foremost want to thank Mike and Davey for their contributions to our franchise and our city

Lakers to be Sold for $10 Billion

The Buss family is entering into an agreement to sell majority ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers to Mark Walter for a franchise valuation of approximately $10 billion, sources told ESPN on Wednesday, the highest ever for a U.S. professional sports franchise.

The Buss family will keep a minority share of the team, just over 15%, for a period of time, a source said.

In addition, Jeanie Buss will remain the Lakers' governor and continue to run the team for "at least a number of years," sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. It was guaranteed as part of the agreement that Buss would remain in charge for the foreseeable future, and Walter fully endorsed this plan, according to sources.

With Mavs still ‘in my blood,’ Mark Cuban credits front-office maneuverings

Mark Cuban might not run the team anymore, but, as he says, “it’s in my blood.” He still owns 27 percent of the Mavericks and, for that reason, he keeps his finger on the pulse of the team and the league just like he always has. And he says that there is an underlying reason why fans should feel good about the position of the franchise.

Yes, Cooper Flagg’s arrival helps. But there’s another reason for optimism and it starts with president of basketball operations and general manager Nico Harrison, according to the man who owned the club from 2000 until Dec. 27, 2023.

Ex-Ravens kicker Justin Tucker gets 10-week ban from NFL

Former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker has been suspended for the first 10 weeks of the 2025 regular season after the NFL found that he violated its personal conduct policy, the league announced Thursday.

Tucker can serve the suspension as a free agent and is free to sign with an NFL team. If he were to sign with a team, he could attend training camp and play in preseason games before the suspension starts Aug. 26.

Tucker, 35, was accused of sexual misconduct by 16 massage therapists from eight high-end spas and wellness centers in the Baltimore area, according to The Baltimore Banner.
