NBA Ratings Plummet

Adam Silver admitted NBA ratings are down this season, but isn’t ready to blame the game’s style of play the other way observers are.

Speaking to the media, the NBA commissioner acknowledged “ratings are down a bit,” but was quick to point out “cable viewership is down double digits.”

Last month saw a high-water mark for streaming, accounting for nearly half of all TV viewing. According to Nielsen, 42% of all TV viewing in November was on streaming.

The commissioner also touched on some theories as to why ratings are down, including Shaquille O’Neal’s on how the three-point shot has made every team play the same style.

LeBron James breaks record for minutes played

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James surpassed six-time NBA MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most minutes played in league history Thursday, adding another major record to his career resume.

Already the all-time leader in career points, James surpassed Abdul-Jabbar with 34 minutes in L.A.’s 113-100 victory over Sacramento, giving him 57,471 in 1,517 games played.

Aside from passing Abdul-Jabbar in the win, James also crossed the 10,000-point threshold with the Lakers. He ranks No. 13 in team history (10,002) and needs 600 more points this season to move ahead of Hall of Famer Jamaal Wilkes (10,601) for No. 10. Along the way, he’d also pass Hall of Famers George Mikan (No. 11, 10,156 points) and Vern Mikkelsen (No. 12, 10,062).

Netflix has up-and-down first foray into NFL broadcasting after early glitch

Viewers could not hear studio host Kay Adams’ voice during her intro for the first 20 seconds or so of the broadcast. Then, about nine minutes later, as studio analyst Mina Kimes offered interesting analysis of Kansas City’s challenge on the offensive line, she was cut off inexplicably by a promo for Squid Game 2. (

That was the story at 11:11 a.m. ET, and it wasn’t a good one.

Things got better for the most part after that, though I had a number of people contact me within the sports industry who suffered some buffering issues in the fourth quarter. NFL viewers didn’t want a lot for Christmas but there was one thing they needed. They didn’t care about presents underneath the Christmas tree or even a transcendent pregame show. But they did need Netflix to solve the major buffering and freezing issues that plagued the streamer during the boxing event headlined by Mike Tyson-Jake Paul last month.

Pete Carroll interested in Bears' head-coaching job

Bill Belichick is no longer in this year's NFL coaching cycle, but another Super Bowl-winning head coach could be.

Pete Carroll, who led the Seahawks to the franchise's lone Super Bowl title back in 2012, is eyeing a return to the sidelines in 2025 and has expressed interest in the Chicago Bears' head coaching position, according to ESPN

Carroll parted ways with the Seahawks in January following a 14-year partnership. He alluded to a possible return to coaching when he was asked about his future back in August.

Gaudreau brothers impact still felt in NHL as 2024 comes to a close

Johnny Gaudreau’s impact on the hockey world was never felt more than when we were no longer able to watch his breathtaking skill.

Johnny and his brother Matthew died Aug. 29 when they were struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding bicycles near their home in Salem County, New Jersey. On Dec. 12, the driver was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of second-degree reckless vehicular homicide, two counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, fourth-degree tampering with physical evidence and second-degree leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The NHL is still in mourning as 2024 nears its end. The Flames and Blue Jackets remembered the 5-foot-9 forward known as “Johnny Hockey” in a special ceremony prior to their game at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary on Dec. 3. Gaudreau played for Calgary for nine seasons before signing with Columbus in 2022.

Judging 2025 HOF candidates by their peak years

There are two main ways to assess a ballplayer's Hall of Fame worthiness: career value and peak value.

While a player's career WAR should be taken into account, it's important to compare how players performed while at their individual bests. That's especially true for some players on the 2025 ballot. Their cases for induction become stronger when you isolate their peak seasons using WAR7. That metric is the sum of the seven best WAR seasons in each player's career.
